After 29 years of a legendary coaching career, Gregg Popovich officially stepped away from San Antonio’s bench, moving to become President of Basketball Operations of the Spurs.
He had the opportunity of coaching some of the best players there have been in the history of the NBA, from David Robinson and Tim Duncan to Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili.
In the last stretch of his career, he was also able to coach one of the future faces of the league, Victor Wembanyama. Curiously enough, both were out for the last part of the 2024-25 season – Popovich following the mild stroke suffered in November, and Wemby due to a vein thrombosis in his shoulder.
Following Popovich’s announcement, he dedicated a nice message on his social media, thanking him for staying alongside him for the French center’s first steps in the NBA.
“29 years. Coach, thank you for your wisdom, for your leadership, for the culture you created… But most importantly, for being a great and inspiring person,” he first commented. “It was an honor to be a part of those 29 years. Wishing you the best on your new chapter,” Wemby added.
