Despite being founded in the 90s, Unicaja Malaga has already achieved a lot. Under coach Bozidar Maljkovic, they won the Korac Cup in 2001, and they also won the Spanish League in 2006 and the Copa Del Rey in 2005 with coach Sergio Scariolo on the bench.
They also won the EuroCup in 2017, led by coach Joan Plaza.
Still, what the current team has achieved is unprecedented. In three seasons, Unicaja has won six trophies, starting from the Copa Del Rey in 2023, followed by the Basketball Champions League last season, and so far, they have won every competition they were part of during the 2024-25 season.
They started with the FIBA Intercontinental Cup and the Spanish Super Cup, they won the Copa Del Rey again, and last weekend they got back-to-back Basketball Champions League titles.
The success of Spanish teams is not a surprise, however, last September it was obvious that Unicaja could be the new Tenerife, until recently the most successful club in BCL history.
Tenerife is always there, after all, they also participated in this year’s Final Four. However, Unicaja is on the rise and currently on a league of their own.
It was evident not only on the court, but also on the way the whole team conducted themselves, never too low, never too high, and totally conscious that they also have a very good chance to win the Spanish Liga Endesa for the second time in their history.
That’s the only goal left for them, and if they make it, they will end up with five titles won in the same season, all of them of real value.
They say that you can lie through numbers, but this is not the case. Unicaja with four new trophies won in one season, the next Intercontinental Cup waiting for them, and the chance to win a unique three-peat in the BCL can’t be underestimated by Real Madrid and Barcelona on the ACB courts, setting the final stage of the season in Spain on fire.
